My 2003 Z4 top came up to close and before it was fully in place the electric motor engaged and closed the pins before the top was in place. Red light started blinking and top would not move up or down. I can here a motor running though. BMW was able to manually close the top for me by using the allen head wrench.
This pin locks the front and center roof modules together when the roof is closed, and because it is in the middle of the roof package when stacked, it locks the rear of the package to the trunk frame. Here are the rollers that engage the pin. The lower arrow shows the "shelf" where the tech discovered the metal shavings.

Went to put it back down again and I was met with this solid orange light: I then removed the Gaptech and crappy scotchlock connectors, but still no joy. Remove motor yourself, posts are available on this site, re-lube motor with diesel oil or wd40 ( mine worked after wd40) . Motor replacement if needed, 100. Probably don’t need to replace the hydraulic pump which is the top part of the assembly . That part with motor is 300-600 on eBay.
